I think the only "bad" form of snitching is the form the government is encouraging all the time and trying to keep from the public. That's the "Jailhouse snitch" who gets to go free for dropping a dime on another inmate. These guys often make stuff up to get better treatment for themselves. It doesn't actually punish real offenders, it punishes some random inmate and rewards some lying fool. Jailhouse snitches are used all the time when the cops are framing some guy too.

The Dubya administration is trying to avoid public disclosure of the times they let admitted multiple murderers and terrorists out on the street for turning in their "accomplices". This is depsite the 6th ammendment to the constitution guaranteeing the right to a speedy and PUBLIC trial. There's no guarantee their letting a small dog out to catch a big dog, either.

By not allowing us to see these figures (once more acting in violation of the constitution) we can't tell whether this is causing more crime to happen (if these same guys strike again or if it was a big dog that we let go to catch a small dog - this has happened) or is actually helping prevent crimes by putting these other dudes away. I tend to be a pessimist when these guys are hiding info. They were hiding the fact that Cheney's energy policies are based on his talks with oil companies for a reason. Likewise they suppressed the figures for terrorist attacks in the world since the figures rose dramatically since the Iraq invasion and it wouldn't help the propaganda that we're "winning the war on terror".

As far as turning in fools who commit crimes in your presence, I'm all for it. For one, I don't think the whole "stop snitching" thing is gonig to work anyway. The mafia had a code of silence (called Omerta) but even they can't keep it together these days. Also, I'm not really in favor of allowing organized crime groups to rule by fear and terror. The same goes for gang members or individual criminals. We should be more united with each other for protecting our neighborhoods from crime, not protecting our criminals from our neighborhoods. I'm not talking about petty ish like turning in your neighbor for jacking the cable connection or the local teenagers hanging out stoned on weed on the corner. It's violent crimes that shouldn't be tolerated. What kind of world do you want your kids growing up in? One that's safe for the criminals to do what they want without penalty in broad daylight or one that's safe for law abiding citizens to walk around in. Remember tht famous story from the late 70's about a women in NY city getting raped and stabbed in broad daylight with people all around and no one did a damn thing? That's not my idea of an ideal world.

That sums it up for me. Every man's responsible for his actions (and should pay the price when he f's up), and we can only overcome common problems by uniting together.

I'd still like a clarification.

Is the victim of a crime who goes to the cops a snitch? What about a rape victim who's been raped by someone stronger than herself and is unlikely to be able to physically retaliate?

Is the clerk who gets robbed and calls the cops a snitch?

Does someone who knows an adult's been molesting children and turns him in to the cops qualify as a snitch?

Is it just someone uninvolved who knows who did a crime that talks that's a snitch?

Please let me know if any or all of these examples meet your definition of a "snitch".


I fear the police state as much as anyone, but I'd definitely go to the cops in some circumstances. I've got kids and a family man, I'd kill to protect them if needed, but I'd sure as hell get the cops involved to do some serving and protecting if I needed them. Vigilante justice is overated (but has it's place in some cases). I mean, if I took it upon myself to kill a known molester I'd feel justified in doing it, but I'd end up in prison myself. Not the most effective strategy for my family, ya dig.
