THE GROUCH OF HIP HOP
By: Rahiem Shabazzz rahiemshabazz@yahoo.com

Stanley Crouch herein after known as Stanley Grouch, the neo-slave for the mainstream press is at it again. His latest target is the hip-hop community. Mr. Crouch attributed the world of hip-hop "where thugs and freelance prostitutes have been celebrated for a number of years." Shocking words inflicted with verbal abuse is all that is offered from Mr. Crouch's article titled "Hip hop's thugs hit new low" Stanley, who is an artistic consultant at the Lincoln center should know a thing or two about artistic expression, but I guess he not.

The mentioning of several prominent rappers i.e. Snoop Doggy Dog, Jay-Z and 50 Cent are called out for the elevation of pimps as cultural heroes. Reading through his article one does not find a solution to what he deems as a massive problem with the youth culture of today. Like so many before him his rhetoric is symbolic to nothing more than a vicious media campaign tactic that reminds me of the days of Cointelpro. Many articles have been written about Cointelpro existing in the hip hop community revealing its self in the form of "the hip hop police". Which is a special task force that is set up to monitor many of today's rap stars. Cointelpro was created to "expose, disrupt. misdirect, discredit or otherwise neutralize the activities of prominent people in the African-American community. Mr. Grouch is the puppet spokesperson for such organization under the disguise of social and cultural critic.

The exemplified work that the hip hop community has done in the form of voters registration, aids awareness and youth mentoring programs escapes the memory of Mr. Grouch who considers hip hop music and culture arrogant. Well, our arrogance comes from our position of nothingness when it all began in the inner city of the South Bronx. Hip-hop was our voice of reasoning that echoed across the world. That nothingness still exists although; the media doesn't project the positive aspects of hip-hop. The hip-hop culture permeates all we do and say and is influential in the political landscape of America. Hip Hop it is the fasted selling music in the world and will continue regardless to folks like Stanley.

The path chosen for many is to document their lives and the reality of today's environment in their music in the same light that Curtis Mayfield and Bob Marley did in there days. Now I can not justify the baffling behavior of others but I can say that an entire culture doesn't warrant the indictment that was handed down to hip-hop.
